Karma- What a beautiful song! I felled in love with this song the very first time I heard it. It’s very dramatic but not too dramatic like some j-pop songs can tend to be currently. The song is pretty unique with the sounds of the violin throughout. This is definitely one of Kokia’s best to date to add on to other wonderful songs from this talented woman.

Insonnia- Pretty interesting song. I believe she is singing Latin in this one but I’m not quite sure. Whatever language it is it is very pretty. I can in vision a cloud floating in the sky on a sunny day when I listen to this song. It’s not quite as good as Karma but very peaceful and calming compared to the emotions displayed on Karma.

Ayumi Hamasaki-Days/GREEN

  1. “Days” (Original mix)
  2. “GREEN” (Original mix)
  3. “LOVE ~Destiny ~ “(10th Anniversary version)
  4. “Days” (Instrumental)
  5. “GREEN” (Instrumental)
  6. “Love ~Destiny~ (10th Anniversary version)

  1. “Days” – The single starts out with the ballad days. It’ been a while in a while since Ayu has put out a powerful ballad at this point, and days really makes up for it.
  2. “GREEN”- This song has some time getting use to. Think of it as an upbeat, Chinese influenced version of Days. It definitely isn’t near as beautiful as Days, but still a pretty ok song. Nothing really special.
  3. “LOVE ~Destiny ~ “(10th Anniversary version) – I still love the original version of this song from 99, but this rendition is still great. The vocals are better, though I feel it doesn’t have the same emotion as the original. Still this is a great song

Ayumi does not disappoint with this single… well maybe for the dreadful music video for GREEN ^-^. Days really is the star of the single and is a great ballad. Good job ayu this is the stuff we like to hear from you!

  5. “Far Away” (HAL’S Mix 2000)
  6. “Far Away” (Ocean View Remix)
  7. “End Roll” (da urban maesto mix)

  9. “Far Away” (Pop ‘e.a.’ Mix II)
  10.  “Far Away” (Dub’s Mute & Feedback Mix)
  11.  “Far Away” (Instrumental)

Far Away is the15th single released on May 17th, 2000.

Far Away is basically similar to SEASONS, but not quite as good. There isn’t much to say about the song because it isn’t as memorable as her previous singles. As for the remixes, the one that stands out is HAL’s Mix.

Overall Far away is a good single. Not my favorite from Duty, but still a pretty good ballad.

Ayumi Hamasaki-A Ballads

Released March 12th, 2003, this is a ballad complication album by Ayumi Hamasaki. It had sold 1,041,000 copies as of 2007.

  1. “Rainbow”
  2. “Appears” (HAL’S Progress)
  3. “Key”~eternal tie ver.~
  4. “You”  (northern breeze)
  5. “To Be” (2003 Rebirth Mix)
  6. “Hanabi”
  7. “M” (HAL’S Progress)
  8. “Dearest”
  9. “Dolls”
  10. “Seasons” (2003 Rebirth Mix)
  11. “Voyage”
  12. “A Song for xx” (030203 Session #2 Take)
  13. “Who…” (Across the Universe)
  14. “Sotsugyo Shashin”

  1. “Rainbow”- The album starts with the pop ballad “Rainbow”.  The song starts with an acoustic guitar and a set of vocals accompany Ayu’s voice. This song is very peaceful and really is different from her previous ballads which were more dramatic, where as this one is very mellow and well how do I say this, “natural” if that makes any sense. Overall a very great song to open this album.
  2. “Appears” (HAL’S Progress) – Now this is a remix of the original song which I absolutely love. Most people aren’t a big fan of appears, but it’s definitely one of my favorites, because of the lyrics. As far as the remix goes, I actually think this is a great rendition of the song. It’s more instrumental if that is the right word, and it is one of the best songs on this album.
  3. “Key”~eternal tie ver. ~- Key appeared on Hamasaki’s album “Duty”, and again is one of my many favorite songs of her’s. This isn’t actually a remix, but the original song. Anyways great song as well.
  4. “You” (northern breeze)-When I first heard this song I was immediately captured with its melody and composition. A more “beachy” feel to the original song, it is again a very peaceful song and is one of the best on the album. I have a hard time deciding whether I like the original or this version better. Either way this is such an amazing song and I highly recommend everyone to give at least this song a chance.
  5. “To Be” (2003 Rebirth Mix) – Again this isn’t really a remix of the song; it’s the same as the original released 1999. I adore this song; it’s such a beautiful song. Sometimes her voice can get a little too whiny for me, but looking past that flaw; this is a very good song and is definitely one of the best.
  6. “Hanabi”- Originally released on the “H” single, this is again a pretty good song. It’s not one of my favorites, because it lacks to get your attention throughout the song. Other than that really it isn’t bad, but not as strong as the other songs. Still it is an emotionally driven song and Ayu sounds really good.
  7. “M” (HAL’S Progress) – Now this is really where things just simply, perfect. As great as the original was, I didn’t know what to expect with this song. It is such a pretty edition of the song, and in my opinion probably the best song on the album, other than “You”. This version is a little expanded and slower than the original, but definitely holds your attention.
  8. “Dearest”- Such s lovely and sad, yet amazing ballad. There is so much emotion and power in the song that Ayu shows. Defiantly a must hear. I already reviewed this song on my very first post so go ahead and check that out for more.
  9. “Dolls”- A very interesting piece of music. It starts out with what sounds like people screaming or something, kid of creepy, but as the song plays out it gets normal. A pretty good song, but not everyone I think might like it, but just give it a few listens and you’ll get use to it.
  10.  “Seasons” (2003 Rebirth Mix) – A very great ballad. It is again the original song from the album “Duty”. It’s not one of    my favorites but still a very good song.
  11. “Voyage”- Such a pretty song this is. Anyone who is a fan of Ayu pretty much knows this song. It pretty much consist of    the piano, flute (I think?), and violin.
  12.  “A Song for xx” (030203 Session #2 Take) – This is a remake of the original song on the album “A Song for XX”. This version is actually better, because Ayu isn’t whining at the tops of her lungs, but the only thing to dislike about this song is the end of the song where all the sudden it gets all rock and roll and you hear nothing, but guitars. It really is a turn off to the song. I’d rather stick to the original.
  13.  “Who…” (Across the Universe)- A very great song. It is kind of sad when you read the lyrics. It talks about someone telling the person they use to be with that they appreciate all that they have done for them and will not forget the time they shared.
  14.  “Sotsogyu Shashin”- This is a cover of the Yumi Arai song. I haven’t heard the original, but it seems Ayu did a pretty god job. It’s a very peaceful song as well, but isn’t the best. I think the album should have ended with “Who…” but still a pretty good ending to the album.

To sum it up, this is a wonderful complication album. It is filled with very peaceful and laid back songs, and is very relaxing. There were some parts of the album where it got a little boring, but it soon would start to pick up. I highly recommend this album to really anyone who wants to get into J pop or most importantly wants to get to know more of Ayu’s music. Really the reason I also love this album is the meaning to it. The cover displays two Ayu’s. Supposedly it is because  Ayu wishes to consult and comfort herself, which I sometimes wish I could do. So really I think this is what this album is for. To learn to comfort ourselves through music, and to find a way to comfort others… wow that was kind of cheesy, but hey it is me after all.

Released April 26th 2000, this is Hamasaki’s 14th single, and the first promotional single for the album, “Duty”.

  1. “Vogue”
  2. “Vogue” (Hal’s mix 2000)
  3. “Too Late” (Soul Solution Remix-Extended Vox-)
  4. “Vogue” (Dub’s mellowtech Remix)
  5. “Vogue” (Groove That Soul Mix)
  6. “Vogue” (400Bpm Fatback Mix)
  7. “Whatever” (FPM’s Winter Bossa)
  8. “Vogue” (Pandart Sasanooha Mix) WTF??(=
  9. “Vogue” (Instrumental)
  10. “Ever Free”

“Vogue”- Opening this sweet and charming song is a composition of drums and what not and a beat influenced by Chinese and somewhat Arabian flavor. While some people don’t really like the song or just think it’s just okay, I say it’s one of her best. The song has such strong lyrics and is really meaningful. For example part of the second verse says:

“When I had noticed, I had come running to this far away place. But that’s not a regret; it’s because you were there for me at that time”.

Just a simple line like that brings me to love the song more and more every time I hear it. So really not everyone may not necessarily love this song, but it still deserves a chance.

**Just to let you know I will not be reviewing the remixes, I usually don’t enjoy them, there are way too many, and plus I’m too lazy.

“Ever Free”- This song is just okay for me, basically a slow pop ballad, and typical Ayu vocals, and style. Just to sum it up a boring song.

A pretty good single, though as a whole not such a solid piece. “Vogue” definitely is the standout track, and really the remixes and “Ever Free” is just pointless.

  1. “Koi no Tsubomi”
  2. “Koi no Tsubomi (A Cup of Milk Tea Bossa Nova Version)”
  3. “Koi no Tsubomi (Instrumental)

This is Koda Kumi’s 31st single. Released May 24, 2006, and sold 273,060 copies at the number 2 position on the Oricon daily charts.

  1. “Koi no Tsubomi”- What could get any better than this upbeat, magical, fell-good song? Seriously, this song is so happy and loveable. It’s the ultimate song to listen to when you’re having one of those bad days or you just fell… well just damn happy! Nothing gets better than a good old sugary pop Japanese song.
  2. “Koi no Tsubomi (A Cup of Milk Tea Bossa Nova Version)”- A more jazzy twist to the original song, again an outstanding piece of music. It’s just as good as the original song, dare I say maybe even better, but I still adore both versions. For some odd reason this song makes me feel so sophisticated, wow I’m a dork!

Koda really proved herself as an artist by showing just how sexy, yet fun and energetic as she can be. I HIGHLY recommend to everyone to give this song a chance. It is one of Koda’s best works of her whole career.

  5. “Sunset~Love is all~(orchestra version)”
  6. “You were…(original mix- instrumental-)”
  7. “Ballad (original mix-instrumental-)

Released December 29th 2009, Ayu’s 47th single, and has sold 114,725 copies so far.

  1. “You were…” This song is like any other winter ballad song Ayu has made. It isn’t bad but still, it has some flaws. Also it is a pretty sad, depressing song, but then again it is an Ayu ballad after all.
  2. “Ballad” What a gorgeous song. Ayu puts her all in this song, and this really makes up for the hasty Sunset/Sunrise~love is all~. It has some Chinese influences similar to GREEN. This song is definitely the best on the single, no doubt about it.
  3. “Red Line-for TA- “To sum it up, this is pretty cheesy. Sure the composition is simple yet pretty, it doesn’t hold your attention for long. Just another pop ballad type song.
  4. “Sunset~Love is all~” Basically if you hated the song like me nothing really new except a better composition, and if you liked the song, well I guess you’ll like it, I guess…

So this was just an okay single for me. The only song that stands out is BALLAD, but that wasn’t enough for me to really like the single. Hopefully Ayu can pull it back together soon.

Ayumi Hamasaki-Free & Easy

  1. “Free & Easy”
  2. “Naturally” (Dolly Remix)
  3. “Still Alone” (Warp Brothers Extended Mix)
  4. “Free & Easy” (Instrumental)

Released April 24, 2002, this is the first single from Hamasaki’s album Rainbow. This is her 26th single of her career and sold 486,520 copies in total.

  1. “Free & Easy”- The song opens up with a soft sounding flute in the background that comes to mind as peaceful. Ayumi sings the first few lines beautifully and as the melody goes along all the sudden the music gets faster and she starts screaming her lungs out. This part is kind of sudden, though as it goes on its repeats back to the peaceful melody, but as the chorus rolls in the loud music comes back. This is pretty much how it is throughout the whole song, though I loved how Ayumi’s vocals were and you can see how much she has improved compared to her last album. The song has an incredible arrangement and beautiful melody. I personally think this is one of her best singles and strongly recommend this to everyone.
  2. “Naturally” (Dolly Remix) – Being as Naturally is one of my favorite songs from Ayu I was a bit skeptical as to how the remixed version would be. Though since Ayu is Ayu of course she would have a remix of this song none the less. It still sounds like the original song except it has some echoing effects of her voice and what sounds like thumping and sort of sounds of the violin (I think). Either way this song is a bit difficult to explain, but overall this a pretty good mix to the song, I’ve heard worse.
  3. “Still Alone” (Warp Brothers Extended Mix) – I really don’t know what to say about this song except its way too long (hence the extended part). It isn’t that bad of a song but it can get a little annoying at times it even makes my head hurt a little with the sound of a vigorous beat that really gets too me. This really isn’t my cup of tea but if you are a huge fan of trance music then this one is for you.

All together, this single was an excellent start to the “Rainbow” era. Ayumi really shows off her vocals well and persecutes the son very well. So other than the last song, this single was very great and is definitely one of her best singles.

Ayumi Hamasaki- I am…

I am.. is ayumi’s fourth full length album, released January 1st 2002. It has sold over two million copies and was number one on the Oricon music charts.

*Bolded are singles released

I am…- The album opens up with the song of the same title with Ayumi singing at first with no music. She sounds pretty good going along and then that’s when the heavy guitars and other beats kick in. At first it’s  pretty interesting but after a while it gets kind of boring, The song just sounds the same throughout and it is kind of hard to keep up. Otherwise I think this song is okay and opens out the album not in a good nor bad way. I just wish it was more captivating.

Opening Run- This is an interlude in the album. It starts with this weird clicking noise, Then you hear a weird echoing noise and then all these different beats come along. All in all this song is kind of pointless but it fits in the mood in the album none the less.

Connected- I fell in love with this song when I first heard it. It is a very techno inspired track. I love the way she sounds in the song. It is probably the best she has in this entire album. In the end I really enjoyed this song its fun and very interesting and shows a new style in her music. I even thought this should have been the opening song because it is just very unique and different all at the same time.

UNITE!- The song starts with a softly played piano and some other instrument but I’m not sure exactly sure what. Then Ayumi  starts singing in a well pitched voice. We then hear that the beat is more fast paced and she stares singing like she’s four years old(I’m jut saying).  The chorus is really the climax of the whole song. I don’t really like how her voice sounds at times but I’m able to look past it. The only problem with this song for me was the break.  There is this heavy guitar and it is just so random and does not go well with that melody. Other than that this song is very cheery and fun and all in all is just okay to me.

evolution- They might as well called this song UNITE! Part 2. It very much resembles the beat of unite but more rock and roll style. I actually prefer this song more though even though her voice is even whinier. The difference also in this song is that it is even more upbeat and cheery and  it even makes you want to sing along. So this song is good too and one of the best tracks on the album.

Naturally- I LOVE this song! It is very slow past but has an electronic feel at the same time. It starts off with a very unique composition that I really can’t explain but there is some drum beats . Then Ayu starts singing and then we get to the part right before the chorus which is my favorite other than the chorus. It basically slows down up until the chorus and then picks up more. I think the song is very relaxing but interesting with the background vocals which I very much enjoyed. It’s basically a techno ballad when you think about it. Some people say it is boring or too laid back but I think it is very unique and one of the best tracks.

NEVER EVER- Well this song if anything sums up the word different. The opening sounds like music they play at the circus or carnivals. Then Ayu sings in a soft, gentle voice. Then sings in a more angry voice in the chorus. I liked the chorus for the most part because she put a lot of emotion into it. This is not one of her best singles that’s for sure. Though I love the way she sounds so angry in here. If you ever feel pissed of this would be one of the songs you listen to.

Still Alone-After a very fast paced song, we get a cool off with Still Alone. When  I listen to this song it is very much a song you would hear in an anime or commercial. I don’t know why but that is like the first thing that comes to mind. The most interesting part is the chorus which isn’t even really that upbeat. There is not much to say but this song isn’t bad but isn’t that great either. It has a nice melody and transitions well after NEVER EVER.

Daybreak- This song has some time getting used to. When I first heard it I honestly hated it. It was just so boring to me. It starts out with this weird chime sounding noise that is hard to explain. Then you hear random drums and she starts with the first verse which plays out nicely. Then you’re thinking well in the chorus it should start picking up but really it sounds exactly the same but Ayu just sings louder but thankfully not in her annoying little kid voice. So really this song is just okay to me. I like the melody but it just sounds too laid back even for me. So this song was okay, not the best that’s for sure. Oh! You should watch the video it is so weird to me, I feel like I’m the only one who thinks she looks like a mummy wrap in cheap ass toilet paper it seems like.

Taskinlude- Here we have another interlude(yah!). I actually thought this was a good track seeing as I think most interludes are kind of pointless. It is a good transition for the album as we get to more of the ballads at the end.

M-I think this is seriously one of the best singles Ayu has put out in her career. She really never sounded better as far as vocals go. She starts of singing the first few lines and the background music really is breath taking. As funny as these sounds the melody sounds like one of those songs they play when someone sees an angel or something. After the first verse we  go straight to the second part of the song then to the chorus. It is very dramatic and the arrangement is sheer bliss. Then the break comes with a heavy guitar and it seems like it is very random and doesn’t fit but trust me it just gets even better. I really love this song and its one of my favorites. The HAL’s progress version is really great as well but that’s on her A Ballad’s complication which I will soon review.

A Song is Born- This was a single released as collaboration with Keiko from the group Globe. When the track starts off it is very calm and soothing and I’m thinking “ Wow this is actually going quite good!”. Ayumi pretty much sings most of the song. So then after a few minutes (Dang this song is long!!) comes the chorus. For the first time it was okay Keiko was very high pitched. But then the second time they both sing and its hell from then on. They sound like cats that are being tortured by being splashed by water. It is really that bad. Though not the whole problem is necessarily there voices but they sing in this pattern that just is very annoying and eventually you feel like slapping the crap out of them very ruining a potentually excellent track. Some people are able to listen to this song but I’m sorry it just does not work out for me.

Dearest- One way to describe this song is simply beautiful. This is the best song on this whole album! If you plan not to listen to the whole album at least give this song a try. It is so heart breaking but peaceful. It starts with the piano and then some guitars follows after. Her vocals are very good seeing in the previous track it was an absolutely  train wreck. In the song she is basically saying that her and her lover  I guess, were hurt and how even though they are apart they will be in her heart until the day she is in eternal sleep and she will always think of them. When you listen to the song look up the translation because you will cry your eyes out. She really brought out her emotions and sang her heart out. At the end her vocals are  little rocky here and there but you can look pass it thank god. This is my favorite on the album and also in general.

No More Words- A strange rattling noise starts off and some other organic sounds as well to start the track. Ayu begins her infamous humming and then eventually a violin and piano starts as she begins the first verse. It’s pretty much like that throughout but as it plays through she puts more emotion and feel. I really like this song a lot. It again is a song they would use for an anime(Btw Dearest was the third ending for Inuyasha). Now that I think  about it this track was an ending for was of the Inuyasha movies.

Endless Sorrow gone with the wind ver.~- This was originally a single that was released as “ Endless Sorrow” but they decided to put the remixed version and this was a great choice. The original one had a very pop sound to it,(which isn’t anything new for Ayu) though it came off as mediocre to me. As sad and emotional as the song was it didn’t hit me. But after listening to this version I think it’s better than the original in my opinion. It has more feeling and an acoustic tone to it. It really sounds like the wind is in the music if that is possible. In the end it is a very great track. Just when think it’s the end of the album(Finally!) there is another track called Flower Garden, which is a hidden bonus track. Drums and a really cheery fast beat play out. I really enjoyed the intro but then the chorus starts I don’t like it for some reason. I think it’s because it  once again sounds like a track from an anime. But other than that it is a cute song. Though I think Endless Sorrow should have been the closing song.

All together this album was pretty good. It precede my expectations for it. I think Ayu did an  excellent job. There were some minor vocal problems here and there especially in A Song is Born. I also think this album is perfect for an anime for some odd reason, none the less it was better then what I had perceived it to be. So here is my overall rating:

A-   92%

Ayumi proved me wrong on my initial thought of this album. You know what they say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

Favorites: Dearest,M,No More Words, and pretty much everything minus A Song is Born, I am.., NEVER EVER, and Daybreak.
